One bite made me into a fan(atic) of the apple. You may say I was smitten!

  • Hello, Mr. Crane,

As to the history of my Smitten apple & “discovery” it is simple - this spring I saw the apples on sale at the local (Indianapolis) Fresh Thyme food store (West 86th Street) and was curious about the new variety.

One bite made me into a fan(atic) of the apple. You may say I was smitten!

    Best regards,

Where are they?

  • We love Smitten Apples but haven’t seen any this year! Where are they?? I live in Canada and look forward to them every year. No apple can compare!

Name: Sue

And btw back, you are absolutely right about them being BMWs.? Between the taste, the texture raw, and the texture baked, I’ve never encountered anything like a Smitten; they’re in a class of their own.

  • Had you not been so generous, I wouldn’t be planting apples at all the others are available in every grocery store in America.?

Name: Nancy S.

I was stocking up recently and a woman next to me was doing the same, we got to talking - both saying that they are the best apples.

  • I’ll keep requesting them everywhere I shop! It may just take time for awareness to spread.

Once people try them, they’ll be hooked. They will wait eagerly for their return each fall, as I do.

Having spent over a year trying to replace that unexpected perfection in my mouth. I applaud you.

My intention was to make a resort community just a little more perfect by providing my neighbors with a tree in a container.

Thank you for your response. I might have to just keep sending away for the actual apples!

Following Jazz to market came others, most recently SMITTEN.

Now here I sit. It’s 2018 and the world is in the palm of my hand. Now even the fruit which I love so dearly may be ordered ONLINE and delivered TO MY HOUSE in 2 days!! Miraculous!

Again thank you for your time and for indulging an old man in his thoughts.

Can I order directly for home delivery? Best apples EVER, but can’t find them anywhere in Oklahoma City!

Thank you!

Hello. We live in Colorado. We used to live in TX and my husband, who is very picky about apples, fell in love with Smitten apples. We have not been able to find them here. Are there any retail distributors of Smitten apples in Colorado? Thanks!

Smitten Apple Tree

I’m not surprised that the Apple gene pool is ‘deep’. Humans have been playing with them for a very long time.

I actually never buy apples. But NOT like these!! Smittens are better than drugs.

Truely smitten by this apple which I first purchased @ a week ago at Sprouts in Peoria, Arizona.

Unbelievably crunchy & great flavor. Grew apples, etc in Gibbsville, Wisconsin till we sold the 20-acre orchard & retail store in January 2007. Now “retired” and growing citrus as a “hobby” in Arizona.

Thanks!

Can we order a case of apples? HEB only had them in stock for a week, and of course, I am smitten!

Hello!

I was at my local Shoprite supermarket in NY and tried out your Smitten New Zealand 3627 Apple. I’ve really never tasted anything like it nor have I ever written to someone about apples!

I’m finding it difficult to locate these apples again in my area. Could you tell me where they are sold or where I’d be able to get them? I’d order by the bag! I'm located on Pine Bush, New York.

Thanks!

Subject: Smitten Apples in SW WA?

Greetings,

I called the 800 number on September 2nd looking for smitten apples in central Washington near the Wenatchee area. The gentleman said that he didn’t have anything in that area for me to obtain at that time, but that I could probably find them in local food chains. I have been to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s in Vancouver Washington, and the Olympia Farmers Market, and I have checked my local stores: Fred Meyer’s, Safeway, Winco. I cannot locate smitten apples at any location. Where can I find these apples? My sister in St. Louis MO raves about them. And she was told they are grown only in WA. The gentleman mentioned he would send me a box. I would be willing to pay for them. I really would love to try these. Just let me know what I need to do or where I can go to buy these.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you and have a great day.

Kind regards,

Where to buy organic smitten

I purchased a bag of organic smitten apples a couple of weeks ago. The best apple I’ve ever tasted. I have gone back to all of the stores where I typically shop, and none have them! Where can I

purchase it? I must have more!

I am in the Greenville, Simpsonville, Laurens South Carolina area.

Thank you!

I’ve been an apple maven for years, often dealing with heritage varieties as well as current. About 15 years ago I came across an apple new to me: SMITTEN. I bought a few, took them home, and tried one.

The rest is history.

I put the apple down, left the rest of the groceries on the counter, picked up my keys, returned to the store, and bought every single SMITTEN left. My fridge was full of apples for months.

To me, SMITTEN mirrored the very best traits of Northern Spy, Gravenstein, Cox’s Orange, Wolf River, and King. What more could anyone ask? SMITTEN was the perfect fresh apple and even better baked.

They made great apple sauce, dried like a dream, and were the only replacement I’d found for Kings in chutney (held their shape).

Being in Canada, the federal government refused import; too far away (NZ), too much risk to existing orchards (disease). Not that long ago, I discovered SMITTEN had made it to North America, to Washington State.

I made a perfect pest of myself with the Nursery, and finally got permission for a small order. This came with another huge obstacle: bringing SMITTEN across the border. I live in BC, and CFIA (AgCan) got into the act. Another several years, a lot more red tape, but finally I got my SMITTEN. If nothing else, I’m persistent.

I have yet to find a single person not impressed with the crispness, sweetness, holding qualities, variety of uses, and...appearance, too. I’m SOLD on SMITTEN.
